Verney and Beezley are back to look back at Euro 2016 after Portugal were named as the new champions following their extra-time victory over hosts France.
Cristiano Ronaldo, who was forced off injured in the final, became the first player to captain Portugal to a major tournament trophy. But the impact of other players cannot be forgotten either.
Verney and Beezley will give their verdict on the final and the tournament as a whole before dishing out some awards in their final Euro 2016 blog.
THE FINAL
Hosts France went into the final as many people's favourites to win the title and for large spells of the game it looked like this could be the case. Les Bleus had more possession and more shots than their opponents, but just couldn't find a way past Portugal goalkeeper and man of the match Rui Patricio. The 28-year-old superbly tipped over Antoine Griezmann's header in the first half before Ronaldo was stretchered off with a knee injury. Rui Patricio also had to be alert to keep out Mussa Sissoko's effort. Griezmann wasted a big chance in the second half when he headed over a delightful cross from Kingsley Coman before Olivier Giroud saw his first-time shot well parried by the goalkeeper. Rui Patricio kept out Sissoko's long-range shot before substitute André-Pierre Gignac's turn and shot hit a post in stoppage time. Portugal didn't actually register a shot on target until the 80th minute, but France were made to rue their missed opportunities after 109 minutes. Raphael Guerreiro's free-kick had hit the underside of the bar, but soon after Portugal got their goal as Eder fired a low shot from outside of the box into the bottom corner of the net. But what did Verney and Beezley make of the final?
JV: I know many don't like to admit it but Cristiano Ronaldo is one of the best ever players of our generation and to have finally got international honours will clearly mean the world to him, despite missing a large chunk of the final through injury. Portugal are not a one-man team though and, whilst Ronaldo will get a lot of the plaudits, the role of some of his team-mates shouldn't be forgotten. Rui Patricio was superb between the sticks and defender Pepe was also excellent, and who can forget Eder as without his goal Portugal may not have gone on to become European champions. It is a great achievement for Portugal and they reached the final on merit, but it has still left me feeling very uncertain about the new third-place ruling. In some ways it is good as it allows smaller nations chance to progress further, but in other ways it is bad as should a team finishing third in their group without any wins in the group stages really be winning the tournament!? Portugal have also become the first team in European Championship history to go to extra-time three times in the same tournament and they only won one game in normal time. I am still not convinced, but then again we have second, third and fourth-placed teams, including my beloved Arsenal, competing in the Champions League. Whether or not people agree with the new format or not, well done to Portugal on what is a great achievement. As for France, they performed better than Portugal for the majority of the tournament but only have themselves to blame as poor finishing and great goalkeeping cost them in the final.
RB: So Portugal are not a one man team, Yes Ronaldo is good there is no doubt, but he can't seem to get a decent Eder (excuse the pun). With Ronaldo off at half-time with a potentially serious knee injury, which we will come to in a while, Portugal went onto win 1-0 in extra time thanks to a goal from Eder...cue Mr Ronaldo's knee injury "healing" and him becoming assistant manager and being in the technical area and showing he's not just a character on the field! Going to disagree with Verney and say that they did actually deserve it, yes Portugal drew a lot of games but their defence is what won them the tournament in my opinion!
EURO 2016
Now that the final ball of the tournament has been kicked, it is time to look back at Euro 2016 and consider whether or not it has been a success. A new format was introduced with six groups instead of four and the four best third-placed teams in the group stages being allowed to progress to the round of 16. Some have said that, apart from the odd few memorable games, Euro 2016 was a boring tournament but then I guess it depends what perspective you look at it from. If you are Portuguese, Icelandic or Welsh, for example, this is a tournament that can be looked at with fond memories. But what did Verney and Beezley make of Euro 2016 overall?
JV: I think it depends what angle you look at the tournament from as individually some teams captured the imagination of the public, but Euro 2016 as a whole didn't really fill me with excitement. England's exit to minnows Iceland was clearly disappointing but, even after our poor showing at the 2014 World Cup in Brazil, I still loved that tournament, but Euro 2016 certainly isn't one I'll look back on too often and think 'now that was a good tournament'. There were the odd few thrilling games, including Portugal's 3-3 draw against Hungary, but not too many others stand out. There were some excellent goals at Euro 2016 and some of those will live long in the memory, but for the most part I didn't find myself as excited as normal by the non-England games at the tournament. I wouldn't say it has been a total failure as in some ways it could still be considered a good tournament, as we got great underdog stories like Iceland and Wales, but it just won't be one that stands out in years to come if I am ever asked about my favourite European Championships.
RB: Like a lead balloon, sorry but this tournament was shocking. Other than Griezmann, Iceland and the Wales story for me Euro 2016 was a let down. It never really got going, never really got the stabilisers off! As an England fan of course I'm going to be bitter but for me there was no real "talking point". The third place rule was silly and there were far too many draws! No-one took Euro 2016 by the scruff of the neck!
AWARDS
Portugal picked up the main prize by lifting the Euro 2016 trophy, but Verney and Beezley have their own awards to give out as they look back at their "best moments" of the tournament.
GOAL OF TOURNAMENT As early as game one we had a contender as Dimitri Payet's late winner from outside the box guided France to a 2-1 victory over Romania. Luka Modric scored a stunning volley for Croatia against Turkey, while Ronaldo netted a cheeky back-heel in his side's 3-3 draw with Hungary. Xherdan Shaqiri's stunning overhead kick from 18 yards out wasn't enough as Switzerland were knocked out on penalties by Poland, while Hal Robson-Kanu won the vote of the BBC Sport viewers with his exquisite turn and finish for Wales against Belgium.
WINNER: Both Verney and Beezley voted for the same goal, so Xherdan Shaqiri picks up our goal of the tournament award.
PLAYER OF THE TOURNAMENT Payet and Griezmann were among those to stand out for hosts France, while the quartet of Ashley Williams, Aaron Ramsey, Gareth Bale and Joe Allen were excellent for Wales. I'd love to say one of our players stood out for England for long spells, but sadly they didn't. Rob wants to give a particular mention to Iceland's goalkeeper Hannes Halldorsson, while Rui Patricio's performance between the sticks in the final makes him a decent shout according to Joe. We can't ignore looking at the champions further either, with Ronaldo and Pepe among those to stand out for Portugal.
WINNER: Both Verney and Beezley voted for Euro 2016 top scorer Antoine Griezmann as Player of the Tournament
(this is getting spooky now Rob)
TEAM OF THE TOURNAMENT Hosts France impressed in most games but let themselves down in the final, while Portugal have to be mentioned...after all they did win it! But it was the so-called smaller nations who really caught the eye at Euro 2016. Iceland defied the odds to make it all the way to the quarter finals in their first ever major international tournament, while Hungary had an impressive group stages before imploding against Belgium in the round of 16. If you take England out of the equation, the British nations did well with Northern Ireland qualifying out of a tough group and Wales doing superbly to reach the semi-finals.
WINNER: Verney voted for Iceland, while Beezley picked out Wales as his team of the tournament.
MATCH OF THE TOURNAMENT Although England ultimately had a poor tournament, our dramatic late 2-1 win over Wales would've been right up there as one of the most enjoyable games before we found out we would end as failures. Czech Republic produced a great comeback from two goals down to claim a 2-2 draw against Croatia, which is certainly worthy of a mention. Hungary's 3-3 draw against Portugal and all of Iceland's group games, such was the following the built up, were the pick of the action from Group F. Another game to really catch our eye was Wales' 3-1 win over Belgium in the quarter final.
WINNER: It was nearly a spooky double vote again. Beezley went for Hungary 3 Portugal 3, but Verney had a late change of mind and opted for Wales 3 Belgium 1 as it was a truly magnificent performance by Chris Coleman's men.
All worthy award winners from this summer's tournament in France. So what about the next tournament? Well after the third-place ruling was introduced, it would be understandable to wonder what on earth they could do next. It seems UEFA were so indecisive on picking a host that Euro 2020 will be held in thirteen cities in thirteen different European countries. I guess they had to think of something wacky to celebrate the tournament's 60th birthday! Roll on the mayhem!

Euro 2016: The Final
Verney and Beezley were set to return to look back at the semi-finals and to preview the final of Euro 2016, but there has been a late change to the line-up.
Beezley is unavailable this week, so up steps fellow Arsenal fan Russ Morgan in his place, as the new duo try and decide who will come out on top between France and Portugal at Stade de France.
But before we do that, let's looks back at the semi-finals and see what Verney and Morgan think of the latest Euro 2016 action.
SEMI FINALS
Second-half goals from former Manchester United duo Cristiano Ronaldo and Nani saw Portugal progress to their second ever European Championships final with a 2-0 victory over Wales. France will be their opponents after an Antoine Griezmann double secured the hosts a 2-0 victory over world champions Germany. But what do Verney and Morgan think of the recent action?
JV: Like many of the neutrals I would have loved to have seen Wales beat Portugal, but it just wasn't to be on the night. After such a valiant performance by the Welsh in the quarter-final victory over Belgium, I genuinely thought they had a chance of causing an upset, and with the scores goalless at half-time Chris Coleman's men were still in with a shout. For all his critics, and as much as some fans find Ronaldo frustrating, he took his headed goal very well to give Portugal the lead early in the second half. Nani diverted in Ronaldo's shot to double Portugal's advantage soon after to leave Wales with an uphill struggle. Gareth Bale did force a decent save out of Portugal goalkeeper Rui Patricio, but Wales didn't really create enough chances on the night. Wales can hold their heads up high though as they weren't expected to get as far as they did, so fair play to them!
In the other semi-final, Germany had more of the possession but just couldn't make their chances count. Emre Can forced a good save out of Hugo Lloris and the world champions looked like the better side. But it was France who broke the deadlock through a Griezmann penalty in first-half stoppage time after Bastian Schweinsteiger was penalised for handball. Whilst the Germans may have felt hard done by for the penalty, they only had themselves to blame for France's second 18 minutes from time. Some kamikaze defending by Germany gifted France possession and, after the usually-reliable Manuel Neuer could only punch Paul Pogba's cross clear, Griezmann turned in the loose ball from close range. Joshua Kimmich twice came close to getting Germany back in it, but one effort hit the woodwork before his header was superbly kept out by Lloris. France progressed and are more than worthy of their place in the final!
RM: Portugal’s class finally shone through with a 2-0 win over Wales. The Dragon’s looked more komodo than fire-breathers. It was truly evident that without linchpin Aaron Ramsey providing the ammo through the midfield, that Bale and co reverted to a more cautious approach. Ronaldo, who by his ‘high’ standards has had a pretty mediocre tournament, more for the failings of his team-mates I might add, finally showed his quality by leaping like a salmon to convert a magnificent header just after half-time. Nani made sure there was no way back after converting a Ronaldo shot three minutes later. Wales journey is over, but will live long in the memory. Take note England!
The German tank was halted by stubborn French resistance and not for the first time. France’s cautious approach looked to have been a bad idea as Germany completely dominated for large parts, but a penalty given away by Bastian Schweinsteiger allowed the tournament’s top scorer Antoine Griezmann to make it 1-0. Griezmann followed it up 18 mins from time, taking the hosts to yet another final.
ROUTE TO THE FINAL
So with France and Portugal booking their places in the final, Verney and Morgan have taken a team each and look back at their tournament so far.
FRANCE - JV:
France deserve their place in the final but they have also made it hard for themselves at times. It took a dramatic late goal from Dimitri Payet to secure Les Bleus' 2-1 victory in their opening group game against Romania in what on paper looked like it should've been a far easier game. Didier Deschamps' men left it incredibly late once again as stoppage time goals from Griezmann and Payet got them out of jail in a 2-0 win over a plucky Albania side. A goalless draw with Switzerland saw France progress as Group A winners. In parts they had looked excellent but they also didn't look unstoppable either. It could've been a whole different story for France had a Griezmann double and a Shane Duffy red card not turned their round of 16 tie against Republic of Ireland on its head. Ireland had taken the lead through an early Robbie Brady penalty and France were 1-0 down at the break. Griezmann struck twice in four minutes to break Irish hearts before France's task was made easier by the dismissal of Duffy, from which Ireland never truly recovered. It was at this point I was starting to think, if England can beat Iceland we might actually have a chance of beating France, but we didn't even get that far. An excellent first-half performance saw France race into a 4-0 lead against Iceland and, despite a spirited fightback from their opponents, the hosts came out 5-2 winners to win their quarter final. As already mentioned France knocked out Germany in the semis and they are now just 90 minutes away from another major international honour.
PORTUGAL - RM:
Portugal seem to have sleepwalked their way to the EURO 2016 final. Actually I think I am being a tad harsh. Yes they drew four of the six matches they played and only managed to beat a superior Croatia in the dying minutes, but a good performance against Wales sees them arrive at the final in good form and high spirits. Coupled with Ronaldo finally ‘arriving’ at the tournament Portugal, although underdogs, certainly have what it takes to give France a game.
EURO 2016 FINAL
In some ways France Vs Portugal has the potential to be a great final and there could be plenty of goals, but it isn't exactly the final many wanted either. So what are Verney and Morgan's prediction for the final?
JV: Before the tournament started, France were my prediction to win it so I'm going to stick with my guns and say a Les Bleus win. I think Portugal have at least one goal in them, so I'm going to go with a 3-2 victory for France after extra time. Having home advantage will be massive for France and with the tournament's leading scorer Griezmann in form it seems a sensible choice for me to back the hosts. But Portugal certainly can't be written off even if I do find the fact they reached the final frustrating. Winning no group games and not winning a single game in normal time until their semi-final victory over Wales yet they are in the final. It just doesn't seem right and it makes the new third-place ruling rather frustrating. On the other end, Portugal haven't actually done anything wrong and are in the final on merit and it will just come down to who wants it more and plays better on the day.
RM: The final is here and to be fair I expected the hosts to be there or thereabouts. Portugal on the other hand, due to severe limitations in their squad, I didn’t seem them going past the second round. There is much to be said that having a truly world class player can rub off on team-mates, you saw that with Wales. Griezmann has been the player of the tournament, I fully expect him to have an impact in the final. Olivier Giroud, who has been slated recently not just by his own club fans, but by his nation has really looked comfortable in a front two, although he has fluffed his lines on occasion, he is the reason Griezmann has produced. Portugal on the other hand have Cristiano Ronaldo a player who can win a game on his own. Frustration along with overburden have hindered his performances, but he needs to play his natural level and not get bogged down for Portugal to have a chance. France 2-0, Giroud to get the winner
When the blog returns we will know which of France and Portugal are the new European champions. Will home advantage prove key for France or can Portugal win their first ever major international tournament? It is a hard one to call but it should be a great final. Beezley will be back in time for the next blog to look back at the final with Verney and to dish out the Euro 2016 awards the duo have chosen.

Euro 2016: The Final Four
Verney and Beezley are back to dissect the goings on at Euro 2016 as we get closer to finding out which nation will be crowned as the new champions.
Wales continue to fly the flag for the home nations, while World Champions Germany and fellow European giants Italy and Portugal complete the final four.
All four sides have a chance of lifting the trophy, but before we review all the contenders let's look back at the quarter finals and what Verney and Beezley think of the latest Euro 2016 action.
QUARTER FINALS
Penalty shoot-outs decided two of the four quarter finals with Portugal and Germany knocking out Poland and Italy respectively. Wales continue to defy the odds as they came from behind to beat a Belgium side, who last year were ranked number one in the world. Hosts France put in a dominant first-half display as they beat Iceland 5-2 to complete the final four. But what do Verney and Beezley think of the recent action?
JV: Although they are now out of the competition, it is worth taking a moment to sit back and admire Iceland's journey in the competition...even if they did knock us out! Considering Euro 2016 was Iceland's first ever major tournament, along with the fact that they finished above Holland and Turkey in qualifying, Heimir HallgrÃmsson's men should be immensely proud of their efforts. It had already been such a fairytale for them in the competition, but being 4-0 down in their quarter final against France left them with too much work to do. However, they refused to give up and did manage two goals in the second half and they can certainly look back at Euro 2016 as a tournament to remember for all the right reasons. As for France, let's just hope Olivier Giroud, who scored twice in the quarter final, can show this kind of form for Arsenal next season. Wales march into the semi-finals following what was a very composed performance and a thoroughly deserved 3-1 win, but more on that later. Robert Lewandowski put Poland ahead inside two minutes of their quarter final with Portugal before a penalty shootout eliminated them from the competition. Portugal have been very below par in the tournament and are one of the reasons I am not as keen on this third-place rule. A poor group stages finishing third and yet they are in the semi-finals. It just seems so wrong, but rules are rules and they got there fairly. The quarter final I saw the least of was in fact the most mouth-watering one as Germany took on Italy. Arsenal's Mesut Ozil got himself on the scoresheet, but the sides couldn't be separated and were level at 1-1 after 120 minutes. Germany missed more penalties in one shootout than in their history - but still won and will take some beating.
RB: As mentioned by Verney this seems to be the year of the underdog what with Iceland and the fact that Wales are still in the tournament! Germany-Italy was an immense penalty shootout, where it seemed more people wanted to miss than score! Portugal of course beat Poland, but I'm staying away from that, and then we have an absolute goal-fest which was France vs Iceland! 5-2.. no that isn't a typo it was actually 5-2! That sets up an absolute monster of a semi-final of France-Germany and also we can't forget Wales-Portugal can we!
WALES
Wales continue to do Great Britain proud in this tournament, so much so that they get their own section in this blog in place of the previous 'England' segment. Chris Coleman's men were simply excellent in their quarter final against Belgium despite going a goal behind to Radja Nainggolan's 13th-minute strike. Captain Ashley Williams equalised on the half hour mark to get Wales back on track before Hal Robson-Kanu and Sam Vokes completed a remarkable turnaround. So what were the verdicts of Verney and Beezley?
JV: After Wales' 2-1 defeat to us in the group stages, I genuinely thought it would kick-start our campaign and dent theirs. Instead, Wales are the ones in the semi-finals and in with a genuine shout of winning the tournament. Not even going a goal behind to Belgium could deflate them and they put in a performance to be proud of. The goal that put Wales 2-1 up within 10 minutes of the restart was one of the highest quality. Robson-Kanu is currently without a club after being released by Reading, but he well and truly put himself in the shop window with a magnificent turn and shot and one of the goals of the tournament. Belgium may have felt that they should've been awarded a penalty, but it was substitute Vokes who had the final say with a headed goal five minutes from time. This was in fact Wales' first ever European Championship but it certainly didn't seem like it and they more than deserve their place in the final four. The question is, just how far can they go? All the way wouldn't be out of the question that's for sure.
RB:Wales?! Well they are still going and are showing they are a lot more than a one-man team, Gareth who?! Fair play to Wales the only home nation left in it and I'd be lying if I didn't say I'm rooting for them! That Robson-Kanu goal- WOW!I honestly believe they can beat Portugal and the belief in the camp must be absolutely out of this world! Beating Belgium 3-1 as well is not easy.. a team that has Courtois, Hazard, Lukaku, Fellaini plus many many more stars!
SEMI FINALS
Everyone loves a good underdog story so no doubt there will be plenty of neutrals cheering on Wales in the semi-final, but each side still has one game to play before they can even think about the final and possible glory. So what are Verney and Beezley's predictions for the semis?
JV: If I could choose a winner from the first semi final it would definitely be Wales. They have defied the odds to be in the final four but fully deserve it, while Portugal, as I have said previously, are fortunate to still be in it due to the third-place ruling seeing them scrape into the knockout stages. In fact, they still haven't won a match inside 90 minutes during the whole tournament. But I just have this sneaky feeling that Portugal are going to win this one. I really hope I'm wrong! World champions Germany face France in the other semi-final and what a tie that looks set to be and one that is incredibly hard to call. If France can reproduce their first half against Iceland they will take some stopping, but Germany are always a hard nut to crack. With France being my pre-tournament prediction to win Euro 2016 I'm going to have to stick with them. But it is one of those where my heart says France but my head says surely it will be Germany. Either way, we'll find out soon!
RB: Semi-Finals? Well I've got everything else wrong so I'm going to say a Portugal win! Wales deserve it but my head says Portugal and surely Ronaldo has to hit form at some point?! My heart says Wales though and I hope they do it! In the other semi... well.... France?! Germany?! No disrespect to the competition but this is easily the biggest match of the Euro's so far and also the hardest to call. I have to go with Germany but this could also go all the way to penalties and I for one can't wait! Is it Thursday yet!?
When we return next time four will be down to two and we will know the finalists for this year's tournament. Will world champions Germany hold both major international honours at the same time? Can France win another tournament that they have hosted? Can Cristiano Ronaldo finally get his hands on a major international trophy? Or can Wales provide a truly wonderful underdog story? We can't wait to find out.
